Dr. Cruz wants YOU to know more about school finance and how it affects Austin ISD...

As superintendent, I am committed to offering all children educational opportunities that prepare them to succeed in college, career and life. The challenge to do so becomes greater each year under our state’s system of financing public schools.

This year, our school district expects to send $175 million in local property tax revenue to the state, more than any other school district in Texas.

We receive back much less in state support. To determine how much state funding our district receives, the state uses formulas developed in 1984.

It’s time for a change. Over the next two months, the state legislature will make important decisions about funding for public education. It is important that we all understand how our school system is affected by these decisions.

I encourage you to learn more about how the Texas system of funding public schools affects Austin ISD and to share this information, which is presented in a short video, an infographic, and a Power Point presentation at

Our school district is fortunate to have so many families and staff who believe in public education. Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement.

Paul Cruz, Ph.D.
